Who doesn't love Tres Leches Cake?

Known in Spanish as pastel tres leches, “three milk cake,” this sweet sponge cake is soaked in three kinds of milk.

Although it is very popular in many parts of Latin America, the Nestlé company claims to have helped the tres leches recipe evolve during World War II (hence the popularity of our southern version, the coconut cake). And let us not forget our European friends who long ago mastered the art of making the perfect English rum cake, and the Italian version, tiramisu. The evolution of the recipe continued in 2004, when Häagen-Dazs released a tres leches-flavored ice cream, containing pieces of rum-soaked tres leche. Yum!

Wherever it came from, this melt-in-your-mouth dessert gets the Avenida Thumbs Up! And if we do say so ourselves, Chef Kim’s version is pretty darn amazing. Try it this week.

Libertad Spanish Language Services – will be offering a 4-week Basic Conversational Spanish Brunch Series at Avenida Restaurant.

This package includes four one hour and fifteen minute classes, each followed by a buffet brunch.

Classes will be held on Sunday June 2nd, June 9th, June 16th and June 23rd at 11:00 am.

Chefs Kim and Edgar Alvarez are Stars! The owners of Avenida were a hit on CBS Philly when “Talk Philly” co-host Pat Ciarrocchi featured them on the Nov. 22 noon show, “Alternative Holiday Dishes.”
